Nature and Functions

The Macao Economic and Trade Office to the European Union in Brussels (hereafter referred to as the ‘Office’) is an official representation of the Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao SAR). Its role is to assist the Chief Executive of the Macao SAR in the fields of economic and trade relations and cooperation between the Macao SAR and the EU and related institutions.

The Office is directly affiliated to the Chief Executive of the Macao SAR and enjoys administrative autonomy. The Office operates in accordance with Administrative Regulation 9/2007 of the Macao SAR.

The Office is committed to tightening the relationship between the Macao SAR and the EU, to highlighting the Macao SAR to the EU and its member states in the fields of economic and trade, in order to ensure the protection of the Macao SAR’s interests in the EU, and to promote The bilateral economic relations between the Macao SAR and the EU and its member States.

The Office follows up the Community's decisions regarding the interests of the Macao SAR in all respects; collects all information emanating from the community concerning the Macao SAR; follows up the supervision of trade agreements and conventions between the EU and the Macao SAR; follows up the cooperative development between the Macao SAR and the EU and its member States in accordance with the existing agreements, participates to the formulation and preparation of projects related to those agreements. In accordance with the general guidelines set by the Chief Executive of the Macao SAR, the Office ensures that the interests of the Macao SAR, including tourism, are maintained in the EU and its agencies, as well as in its member States.

In addition to the economic and trade relations between the Macao SAR and the EU and its member countries, the Office is also in line with the Macao Customs Service and the Macao Economic Services to follow up the relations between the Macao SAR and the World Customs Organization, as well as other economic and trade organisations with headquarters in Europe.
